Budgeting for Self Storage

Categories: Self-Storage

Budgeting for your self storage unit can help alleviate some of the stress that is normally associated with using a storage facility.

Why you should budget for self storage.

No matter what brings you to self storage you should make yourself a budget to ensure that your items are properly paid for while in storage. Additionally you will need to budget your time, a lot of people forget about this aspect when moving into self storage. While the word ‘ budgeting’ might be daunting it doesn’t have to be by any means.

Budget your Time

You’ve decided to move your things into storage, now what?

First, you will need to decide the area you would like to store your things. Keep in mind if it will be accessible to you such as close in proximity to your home. You might only have one day to get things into storage so you won’t want to be spending 2 hours driving back and forth. Location is key and if the location doesn’t work for you its not an option. No matter what the monthly rate maybe. Another consideration is amenities. Does the storage facility have gated entry? Do they have cameras? How’s the lighting? All excellent questions to consider when making your move into self storage. Along these same lines you’ll want to know what the access hours are, most of our Tellus Self Storage locations offer 24 hour access, but since this does vary its a good idea to verify the hours before moving in.

After selecting your storage facility we suggest going to view the property in person. This will allow you to speak with one of our Storage Experts in person to address any questions, concerns or comments you may have. Additionally you can ask about any ‘specials’ that might be going on.

Budget for your payments

Calculate your budget and time frame for 3, 6, or even 9 months as you do not know how long it will take to sell your home/purchase a new one. Make sure you know when your rent is due and how to submit payments. All of our Tellus Self Storage locations do not accept cash, so please keep this in mind. We understand that when things are “out of sight” they often become “out of mind”. In order to prevent this, make a calendar reminder, set an alarm or even just pick a day to pay your rent that is before the due date. This way you won’t become subject to late fees. Pay on time or early, we do offer auto-pay as well if you’re interested in the set it and forget it mindset.

Conclusion

No matter what your long or short term plans maybe for your storage unit you can surely benefit from budgeting. We wish you the best of luck and if you have any questions please reach out to our Storage Experts. They are here to help you in any way they can.
