Pest Control: Working with your storage facility

Categories: Seasonal, Self-Storage

Staying on top of pests takes a team effort, because once you place a lock on your storage unit we don’t have access to your items. Here’s a bit about what you can do to help us out.

Self Storage Pest controlPest Control Knowledge is Power

When considering self storage it is important to know what items you should put in a storage unit, and what items you should not put in a storage unit. This is one of the most important parts of pest control at any self storage facility. Getting tenants to follow basic housekeeping items can help prevent unwanted infestations.

Things you should not store

A few items you want to avoid putting in a storage unit are:

  • Any and all food items (including canned or dry food, even if they are in a ‘air tight container’ pests will find a way)
  • Medications
  • Candles / waxes (especially scented)
  • Cleaning chemicals (liquid or powder, these smells attract pests)

As stated above these are just a few items, but not all. If you are unsure if your items should be in a storage unit or not, you can ask your Property Manager. If you don’t have the time to discuss items that you are going to be storing you can simply ask yourself two simple questions to determine if the items in question should or shouldn’t be stored.

These questions are:

  1. Can you eat it?
  2. Does it have a smell to it?

If you answered YES to any of the two questions, chances are that the item in question; will in fact, attract pests. Best not to store it.

Pest control is very important to us here at Tellus Self Storage. We strive to give our tenants the best experience possible which is why we aim to spread education and awareness.

Here at Tellus Self Storage we treat out properties with pest control once a month. This includes spraying pesticide, and putting out bait. Bait is used as a precaution and also to lure pests away from the storage units themselves. Keeping them on the outside of climate controlled entry doors as well as around non-climate storage units. Please be mindful of the black boxes you see on our property, these are there as part of our monthly pest control regime. These black boxes are part of our monthly pest control and should not be moved, if you notice one in need of adjustments please contact your Property Manager.
