Preparing Storage for Emergencies

With hurricane season on the horizon, it’s important to know what to do to keep your storage safe during the disaster. For Tellus Self Storage our facilities in Gulfport, most of our facilities are above I-10 so flooding shouldn’t be a much of an issue. Be sure to put smaller items like clothes and video game consoles into a container. Backup data on your electronics as well via multiple SD cards, USB flash drives, cloud, or other various data storage devices. Remember to always keep calm.

Place the more vulnerable item on the top of any box stacks that you have. Put your vehicle in storage if you’re concerned about it getting damaged in the storm. If you can, give your items some cushion by wrapping in bubble wrap, blankets, or putting items in plastic bags. Rent the biggest unit possible so you don’t have to worry about not having enough space. If available, choose a climate-controlled unit just to be on the safe side. Unlit storage facilities are prone to thieves, luckily here at Tellus Self Storage we have well lit storage areas and DVR camera surveillance to prevent theft. Don’t wait until the last minute to store, be alert of the weather at least a couple of days beforehand.

At Tellus Self Storage we have an insurance program with four different levels of coverage. Our program protects you against hurricanes, floods, tornados, fire, lightning, hail, burglary, windstorms, and vandalism. Some homeowners and renters’ insurance covers property stored in self-storage units. Be sure to first contact your current insurance agent to see if your insurance covers anything you store with us. It’s better to be safe than sorry. Be one step ahead of storms this hurricane season by renting with us at any of our six Gulfport locations.
